Advent – Week 1 – Cycle C

Mass Readings

Reading 1 – Jeremiah 33:14-16
Psalm – Psalm 25:4-14
Reading 2 – 1 Thessalonians 3:12 – 4:2
Gospel – Luke 21:25-36

My thoughts:

What if you received a telephone call from Heaven saying that Jesus would be coming to spend Christmas day with you? How would you prepare?

1st & 3rd readings = warnings

2nd reading = how to prepare.

1 .ADVENT AND THE SHAKING OF THE KINGDOMS by Bishop Barron

Barron’s summary

Our Gospel for this first Sunday of Advent begins where the readings for the end of last liturgical year left off, namely, with apocalyptic musings. We’re encouraged to look for the Son of Man, coming on the clouds of heaven, which signals the end of the world as we know it. But the Son of man is coming on the clouds of heaven even now in the life of the Church. Even now the true king, the successor of David, is in our midst. But we need eyes trained by the liturgy to see him.

my notes…

Jeremiah – raising up of a just shoot for David = fulfillment of Nathan’s prophecy, that a Son of David would reign forever.

Coming together of a number of prophetic utterances.

Spiritual point behind all of this = we should not trust in any of the powers of this world to give us final security & peace. Such peace will come only with the arrival of God’s kingdom = this resonated with the ppl in ancient times & resonates with us today.

Ancient insight that goes right back to these biblical prophets = never put your ultimate faith in any of the political or social arrangements of this world. They are all attractive but they are all accompanied by shadows & destined to fall. What you should look to is the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven — the establishment of God’s Kingdom with God’s Power.

That kingdom is none other than the Church. Christ coming on the clouds of heaven… Christ coming on the clouds of incense.

That is the adventus = arrival we should wait for.
